Bookbath with Panashe Chigumadzi: Politics of black and pan-Africanist solidarity

Panashe Chigumadzi is an essayist and novelist, born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa. She is the founding editor of Vanguard Magazine, a platform for young black women coming of age in post-apartheid South Africa. Chigumadzi is currently pursuing her PhD at Harvard University's Department of African and African American Studies. Her last book "These Bones Will Rise Again" reflects on the 2017 “coup not a coup” that ended Robert Mugabe’s 37 year rule in Zimbabwe through intercession with the spirits of anti-colonial heroine Mbuya Nehanda and her late grandmother Mbuya Chigumadzi.

Chigumadzi will in conversation talk about her latest book which provides a panoramic view of Zimbabwe’s history from the pre-colonial era right up until the events leading up to the “coup not a coup”. What has happened in Zimbabwe since and why is the old Zimbabwe the new Zimbabwe? With many from Zimbabwe emigrating to South Africa, what can be said about being an African immigrant in post-apartheid South Africa? With periodic spates of violent attacks in South Africa towards African immigrants, how can we understand this violence through the lense of historical anti-Blackness in the country? With this understanding, how can we promote politics of black and pan-Africanist solidarity?

Chigumadzi will be in conversation with Michell Mpike, researcher and facilitator from South Africa, living in Norway.
