16. oktober, kl. 08:00-09:00
Fellesrådet for Afrika

Facebook event

This event is a part of The Council's migration campaign 2019

Although Africa's contribution to greenhouse emissions globally is small, countries on the continent are among the most vulnerable to climate change, according to the UN panel on climate. They predict that millions of people will be affected by drought, floods, landslides and lack of water and food. What will this mean for the peace, stability, migration patterns and development on the continent?

Migration is a significant contributor to urban growth and urbanization processes in African countries, as people migrate in search of social and economic opportunity and from climate change. What impact does migration have on urbanization and how is this further challenged by Africa's rapid population growth? What is the link between climate change, migration and urbanization in Africa's future?

In the panel:

Patience Mususa, Senior Researcher at The Nordic Africa Institute. She has researched copper mining towns, urbanization, development-induced displacement and resettlement in the Zambian setting. Part of the research project "The practice and politics of urban climate mitigation and adaptation efforts at the margins".

Henrik Urdal, Director at the Peace Research Institute Oslo. Research interests are climate change, environmental change and armed conflict, among others. Urdal has worked on projects related to armed conflict in Sub-Saharan Africa, conflict trends and security implications of climate change.

Tor Arve Benjaminsen, Professor at Noragric, Norwegian University of Life Sciences. As a human geographer Benjaminsen has studied environmental change and its governance within a broad and critical political ecology. Has done extensive research on the Sahel.

Anna Skibevaag, former junior expert in UN Habitat, now a board member of Habitat Norway.

A light breakfast, tea and coffee will be served 07:30.
