Civil society under pressure – what now for Zimbabwe?

The last months Zimbabwe has been experiencing unrest and violence. Human rights organizations have reported on 1800 human rights violations, 17 people have been killed, and over 900 have been imprisoned.

Many are now questioning where president Emmerson Mnangagwa, is leading the country, and how civil society actors will be able to operate in the future. What role can European governments play in strengthening and protecting civil societies space to operate?

The background for this is a severe financial situation, and a population that is frustrated by dramatically increasing living costs such as a packet of painkillers increasing from 5USD to 40USD. Civil society organizations, unions and student movements have organized peaceful nationwide demonstrations. Unfortunately, they have been met with disproportional police and military violence and brutality.

Students and Academics International Assistance Fund (SAIH), The Norwegian Council for Africa, and The Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO) invites you to a panel discussion with:

-Political analyst Sakhile Subisisiwe Ngoma from Women in Politics Support Unit
-Hugo Knoppert from the Zimbabwe European Network (ZEN)
-Takunda Archlove, Norec exchange participant and student activist from Zimbabwe

We will start with serving a light breakfast snack from 08:00, and the event will start at 08:30 sharp.

See you there!
